Oriental shorthairs were “born” around 1950’s by mating Siamese cats with other cats – creating a variety of colors and patters but keeping the elegant looks. It is allowed to breed Siamese and OSH together, so the kittens can be either of the breeds.
Orientals
like to be there, where something is happening. They are curious and very
social cats. If you want a cat that does not make a sound and is sleeping most
of the time – orients are not meant for you.

The meow of
an oriental resembles in my ears a pair
of rusty hinges. And these breeds can
really make themselves heard if they want to! Feeding time might sound like a
cacophonic symphony while your orient is making clear that its that “magical
moment” of the day and that he is sooooo starving to death and needs food NOW!
Orients generally like food. Almost any food. And they can eat themselves fat,
so it is important to control their eating to avoid weight gain by limiting the
amount of food given. We’ve found out that best method for feeding our Kira has
been with barf as it takes her longer to eat the raw foods than it does to eat
the normal kitty chow.
Orients are
also very social. The best friend for an orient… is another orient, as most of
the other cat breeds are not even remotely close to the activity level of
orients. Orients love to be middle of attention, and sometimes if a demanding
meow is not enough they might use their claws or teeth or “accidently” drop
down your glass vase from the shelf. They have fine bones and slender look – but do
not be fooled – orientals are not made from porcelain and do not break easily.
Even they look very athletic, they can be quite clumsy.
Oriental is
like a kitten in its character, never growing up, always very playful. They are
also quite intelligent, and find out many wonderful ways of surprising you even
on daily basis. Like Kira, if her dinner is late at mornings, she goes to the
cabinet, picks up her food bowl and drops it on the forehead of Mommy while she
is still sleeping. She has also done this while Mommy was showering. But it
works! Wont take many minutes until Kira’s belly beast is tamed and she is
happily eating.
Orientals
are not cats for everyone – they are noisy (by default!), active and very
social – so the owner (I prefer using word human slave), must be prepared for
this. But like with every rule, there are exceptions and there are orientals
that do not fit to this standard.
Oriental is
not a “fashion breed” and I hope it will stay that way. If you are interested
of this breed you can contact Mommy. She will be happy to answer to your
questions !
